Working Groups
About
We created working groups In order to identify public policies that will advance PMA’s mission of pursuing Christian anti-racist work by dismantling unjust structures. Working groups consist of coalition members, partners, and volunteers who are interested in working together to identify specific policies that the broader coalition should advocate for.
Our Groups
To start, PMA has created a working group for each of the following policy areas with notable racial disparities:
Education Working Group
New York City has one of the most segregated public school systems in this country, and that’s a present day stat. Racial and economic inequities have created deep gaps in access to quality education. The Education Working Group strives to ensure all children have access to robust education and enrichment experiences so that they will thrive, regardless of their gender, race, zip code, or learning abilities, We welcome you to join us as we examine the history of organizing for equitable public schools, explore current issues and policies, and work to identify sustainable solutions.
Criminal Legal System Working Group
The criminal legal system has a wide reach that touches the lives of many New Yorkers. Clear racial disparities infect every step of the system, resulting in Black and Brown people being arrested, charged, convicted, and incarcerated for crimes at far higher rates than white people. The Criminal Legal System Working Group promotes a fairer and more equitable system where the justice and safety of all peoples are equally valued. We welcome others to join us in grappling with these complex issues.
Housing Working Group
Unjust housing policies and practices are a major problem in New York City. Communities with the largest share of Black and Latino residents are also the most rent-burdened with housing in greatest need of repair. Meanwhile, in our segregated City, we still struggle to build affordable housing in high-opportunity neighborhoods with good schools. The Housing Working Group works to make housing more affordable, and accessible to all in the City. Join us to learn and address the various issues that make affordable, quality housing a challenge..
